
Why we put our bathroom lamps through “the torture chamber”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are absolute nightmares for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, crazy humidity, and temperatures that swing from freezing to boiling in a matter of minutes. If a heating lamp isn’t built for that kind of chaos, it’s going to pop or short out in a few weeks. We aren’t interested in guessing if a lamp will last. We’d rather break them in our lab than have them break in your ceiling.
The problem with steam
Here is the thing about steam: it finds a way. It creeps into the tiniest gaps in the housing and sneaks past seals. Once that moisture hits the high-voltage parts, you get leakage. In a bad scenario, that means electrical arcs or a total meltdown. That’s why we throw every batch into these humidity chambers. We push the heat and moisture to the absolute limit. It’s a stress test. If there’s a weak solder joint or a lazy seal, it’ll fail right there in front of us.
What we’re actually looking for
We’re mostly hunting for two things. First, the seal. If the spot where the wires enter the quartz glass leaks even a little, oxygen gets in. That ruins the halogen cycle, the filament oxidizes, and pop—there goes your lamp. Then there’s the corrosion. We check the contact pins to make sure they aren’t rusting. When pins corrode, they create resistance. Resistance creates heat. Too much heat at the connection point and you end up melting the socket. Not a great look.
The tricky part
It’s a bit of a balancing act. These infrared lamps get incredibly hot. That heat is great for drying out your bathroom, but it also makes the materials expand and contract. Think of it like the lamp is “breathing.” As it cools down, it can actually suck moisture into the base. We have to get the seal just right—tight enough to keep the water out, but with enough room to move so the glass doesn’t crack under the pressure. At the end of the day, a “cheap” lamp is a liability. We’re perfectly happy to kill a few units in our testing chamber if it means a thousand of them don’t fail in the real world.
