
Fixing the Glare in Bathroom Heaters
Most bathroom heaters use short-wave infrared lamps because they’re great at one thing: getting you warm the second you flip the switch. But there’s a catch. That bright, harsh white light from standard quartz halogen tubes can be a real pain. It strains your eyes, and if you’ve got a baby in the house, those developing retinas are even more sensitive. It’s a bit too much. To fix this, we play around with the light coming off the lamp. We add special coatings or filters to the quartz glass that basically act as a gatekeeper. They block the blinding visible light but let the heat sail right through. You still get the warmth, but without that “staring into the sun” feeling. By shifting the heat toward a longer wave, we kill the dazzle. You get the cozy heat flux you want, but your eyes don’t have to suffer for it. Now, about the build. We use high-purity quartz glass because these things go from ice cold to scorching in seconds. If you use cheap glass, it’ll crack under the pressure. Most of these are set up for standard 220V-240V home circuits. We’re careful with the wattage, too. It’s a balancing act. If we crank the power too high in a small plastic housing, the casing starts to warp. Not ideal. We keep it dialed in so the reflector stays cool and the whole thing lasts. When it comes to putting them in, it’s pretty simple. They usually just pop into standard R7s sockets. Here’s the honest part: adding those filters does mean you lose a tiny bit of heat efficiency. You’re trading a small percentage of energy to get that soft, gentle glow. But for the sake of safety and comfort? It’s a trade we’re happy to make. Just a quick tip—make sure your wiring can handle the constant draw. If the voltage drops, the lamp won’t live nearly as long.
